The websites below, talking to other librarians and my own experience have suggested that the best ways to outreach are not to make assumptions about the backgrounds of the Latinos in your community, as they can be quite diverse, and to involve them in program planning. A good place to begin is by taking a few minutes to talk to any Spanish speaking patrons who regularly come to the library. Ask them what programs they would like to see and if they know anyone who might be interested in translating storytimes or other programs if you do not speak Spanish yourself. Local schools are also a good resource to find out if any Spanish language outreach programs already exist in your community that you could partner up with. Here are links to a few websites that may contain additional helpful information.

Raising A Reader

Raising A Reader(RAR) is a program that focuses on preschool children and their families, educating them about the importance of reading to children and the use of libraries. The program is fully bi-lingual in English and Spanish. RAR involves the participation of families, preschools and public libraries.
